Public Works Department

PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT

The City’s Public Works Department is charged with the responsibility of maintaining all city roads, sidewalks and curbs, making minor repairs and maintenance to drainage facilities and canals, and maintaining all city parks, medians, seven baseball/soccer fields, shuffleboard, volleyball and tennis courts and other city facilities and buildings.

The personnel make-up consists of ten general maintenance workers with varying skills of carpentry, minor plumbing, minor electrical, masonry, landscape planning and maintenance, and irrigation. This diversity brings great savings to the citizens of our community as they carry out repairs and care for both the interior and exterior of our city hall, fire department, and police department and recreation center and outside grounds. The safe operation and minor repair of the City’s patrol vehicles, fire rescue apparatus, public works trucks and grounds keeping equipment is handled by our ASE certified automobile technician of twenty years’ experience. With the ability to make most service repairs “in house”, we are able to keep the rising cost of outsourcing such work down to a minimum, limiting the down time of disabled vehicles, this keeping our City’s provision of services at its highest efficiency.

Besides all the aforementioned maintenance, an ongoing effort of beautification to our medians and various planters of the streets and boulevards can be seen throughout our city. Efforts are made to use a selection of trees, plants and shrubs that are native to the area and are drought tolerant. Through a recycling grant, we acquired a small shredder, enabling us to mulch small tree limbs, etc. and to use the resulting mulch in the city beautification projects. All of these efforts and hard work by the dedicated employees of Public Works are an attempt to bring beauty and pleasure to the citizens of our community, helping to ensure that living in Indian Harbour Beach is a truly pleasurable experience.

Richard G. Edgeton Bicentenial Beach Park

Five new family size picnic units have been constructed giving more comfort and size for our patrons.  We hope you enjoy our facilities and have a pleasant time.

W. L. Gleason Park

New playset equipment for 5-12 year olds is located at the south area of the park while a new set for 2-5 year olds is located north of the Recreation Center.  Also we hope you enjoy the new fountains in the lake.  These fountains, while adding to the beauty of our park also serve a vital function.  Aerating the water provides needed oxigen for fish and wildlife and also cuts down on the growth of bacteria and algea.  It is a very important part of the City's N.P.D.E.S requirements established under Federal guidelines for storm water control.

Water Conservation Please remember that the most effective times for watering are either early in the morning before 8:00 A.M and in the evenings after 6:00 P.M. Watering during the middle of the day would be a waste of water since the hot sun will evaporate it almost as quickly as it hits the ground. Please water wisely.
