SAVE THE SPACE PROGRAM
At this time, all reidents are encouraged to write letters to the President seeking his help in persuading Congress to save America’s Space Program, which in turn will help bring our country out of the current recession. The following is the letter sent by our Mayor Mary Anne O’Neill to President Barack Obama enlisting his help in saving our Space Program.
Dear Mr. President:
As Mayor of the City of Indian Harbour Beach, I am writing to you about something near and dear to the hearts of our nearly 9,000 residents – our wonderful Space Program.
Given the harsh economic conditions we are all having to endure at this time, the thoughts of losing another 10,000 or more jobs and the awful ripple effects that would have on our local economy are paramount in the minds of the many families throughout our community. They look to us, their elected local officials, for guidance and assistance.
In August of 2008, when you shared your vision for America’s future with the citizens of Florida, you pledged to give NASA the support it needs and to ensure that our Space program does not suffer when the Shuttle goes out of service. You recognized that we cannot afford to lose the wealth of expertise found here in our dedicated space workers. I know that you are aware of the myriad of spinoff benefits that derive from our space program – not only in technology, but also in energy, medicine, manufacturing, and untold applications in our everyday lives. Your ensuring adequate funding for America’s space program can be the engine that drives our economic recovery!
As a former EEO social scientist, college professor, mother, grandmother, widow of an Air Force veteran and a veteran myself – but especially as the Mayor of one small city in America, I implore you to provide continuing funding to ensure the viability of THE major source of pride and worldwide respect for our country over the past fifty years – America’s Space Program!
Very Sincerely,
Mayor Mary Anne O’Neill
